Loblaw has announced it will shut down all 170+ Theodore & Pringle optical locations across Canada, beginning in September 2025. The closures are part of a new partnership with Specsavers Canada, which will open 111 new outlets inside Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, and Zehrs stores, with further expansion planned into five new provinces and one territory.
While the move is being presented as a retail brand transition, the reality for employees is stark: jobs are being eliminated. Workers will need to make urgent decisions around pensions and retirement benefits.
Pension Choices in the Face of Closures
When large employers restructure or divest business units, affected employees often receive options on how to handle their pensions. These typically include:
- Taking the monthly pension directly from the company plan.
- Transferring the commuted value into a locked-in retirement account for independent management.
- Setting up a copycat annuity, which mirrors the company pension but is guaranteed by a Canadian insurance company rather than tied to the employer.
Pension stability is only as strong as the business behind it, and retail restructuring shows how quickly circumstances can change.
Why Commuted Value and Copycat Annuities Matter
In situations like this, many employees consider moving their pensions out of the employer’s plan. A commuted value transfer provides control over investments and the potential for long-term growth. A copycat annuity preserves lifetime income guarantees while shifting the obligation from the employer to a financially strong insurance company. Both options help safeguard retirement income against future corporate changes.
