What Documents Do You Need for a Copycat Annuity Quote?

A copycat annuity cannot be quoted accurately from a monthly pension number written on a scrap of paper.

The insurer needs to know exactly what it is being asked to reproduce. That can include the lifetime pension, bridge benefit, survivor percentage, guarantee period, indexing formula, pension start date and the amount available to purchase the annuity.

When one of those details is missing, the resulting comparison may be incomplete or misleading.

Before asking for a copycat annuity quote, gather the full pension package rather than relying on an estimate or summary page.

What Is a Copycat Annuity?

A copycat annuity, sometimes called a mirror annuity, is an annuity purchased from a Canadian life insurance company using pension funds.

Its purpose is to reproduce the applicable pension payments and features provided under the employer’s defined-benefit pension option.

Depending on the pension, that could include:

An annuity is a contract under which an insurance company receives a lump sum and provides regular payments based on the contract’s terms. A lifetime annuity can continue payments for the insured person’s life, with survivor or guarantee provisions available when included in the contract.

A copycat annuity is only relevant when the pension plan permits the necessary transfer and the annuity can be structured to meet the applicable requirements.

Why a Pension Estimate Is Usually Not Enough

A pension estimate is useful for preliminary planning.

It may show:

However, an estimate can be based on assumptions that later change.

The final pension statement may use:

  • A different valuation date
  • Updated interest rates
  • Final credited service
  • Final pensionable earnings
  • A confirmed retirement date
  • The selected survivor option
  • Updated spouse information
  • Current transfer values

Because annuity pricing and commuted values can change, a preliminary document generally supports only a preliminary analysis.

A firm comparison requires current pension information with a valid election period.

Document 1: The Complete Final Pension Statement

The most important document is the full retirement or termination statement issued by the pension administrator.

It may also be called:

  • Final pension statement
  • Retirement option statement
  • Termination statement
  • Pension election package
  • Benefit option statement
  • Retirement package

The document should set out the pension benefit earned and the available payment or transfer choices.

Send every page, including:

  • Cover letter
  • Benefit calculations
  • Option tables
  • Survivor illustrations
  • Commuted-value breakdown
  • Tax information
  • Transfer forms
  • Election forms
  • Explanatory notes
  • Benefit schedules

A detail needed for the quote may appear in an appendix rather than on the summary page.

Document 2: The Pension Election Form

The election form shows the exact choices the pension plan is offering.

It may include options such as:

  • Single-life pension
  • Joint and survivor 60%
  • Joint and survivor 75%
  • Joint and survivor 100%
  • Five-year guarantee
  • Ten-year guarantee
  • Commuted-value transfer
  • Transfer to a life annuity
  • Deferred pension

The annuity quote must be compared with a specific pension option.

For example, a quote based on a 60% survivor pension cannot be compared fairly with an employer pension illustration using a 100% survivor benefit.

Do not sign the election form simply to obtain the quote. Provide an unsigned copy for review.

Document 3: The Lifetime Pension Amount

The statement must identify the pension payable for life.

Confirm whether it is shown:

  • Monthly or annually
  • Before or after tax
  • Before or after an early-retirement reduction
  • Before or after the bridge benefit ends
  • Under a specific survivor option

A total initial pension is not enough when part of the payment is temporary.

The quote needs to distinguish between the amount payable for life and the amount that ends at a specified age.

Document 4: The Bridge-Benefit Details

A bridge benefit is a temporary pension payment that commonly ends at age 65.

The insurer needs to know:

  • The bridge amount
  • The date it begins
  • The date it ends
  • Whether it changes before ending
  • Whether it continues to a survivor
  • Whether it is included in the total pension shown

For example:

  • Lifetime pension: $3,500 per month
  • Bridge benefit: $900 per month
  • Total to age 65: $4,400 per month
  • Total after age 65: $3,500 per month

Without the breakdown, an insurer could not determine which portion should continue for life.

Document 5: The Survivor Pension Information

A married pension-plan member will usually have one or more survivor options.

The documents should state:

  • Survivor percentage
  • Amount continuing to the spouse
  • Spouse’s date of birth
  • Whether the bridge continues after death
  • When survivor payments begin
  • Whether the amount is reduced after the member dies
  • Whether waivers are permitted
  • Whether spousal consent is required

A joint and survivor annuity continues payments while either covered person remains alive, based on the terms selected.

The spouse’s age is important because annuity pricing reflects the expected duration of payments to both people.

Document 6: Indexing or Cost-of-Living Provisions

Some pensions increase after retirement.

The statement or plan booklet should explain whether the pension has:

  • Full CPI indexing
  • Partial CPI indexing
  • A fixed annual increase
  • A maximum annual increase
  • Conditional increases
  • Ad hoc increases
  • No indexing

The insurer must know exactly which increases are guaranteed under the employer pension.

A statement that simply says “indexed” may not provide enough detail. The indexing formula, timing and maximum should be included.

Indexing can substantially affect the cost of reproducing a pension because each increase may continue for the rest of the pensioner’s life.

Document 7: The Guarantee Period

A pension may guarantee payments for a minimum number of years.

Common options include:

  • No guarantee
  • Five-year guarantee
  • Ten-year guarantee
  • Fifteen-year guarantee

Provide details explaining:

  • When the guarantee begins
  • Who receives payments after death
  • Whether the remaining value can be paid as a lump sum
  • Whether the guarantee applies before and after the spouse’s death
  • Whether the bridge benefit is included

Lifetime annuities can also include a guaranteed payment period. When the annuitant dies during that period, remaining guaranteed benefits are paid according to the contract.

Document 8: The Commuted-Value Breakdown

The statement should show the capital available under the transfer option.

Look for:

  • Total commuted value
  • Tax-deferred transfer amount
  • Locked-in amount
  • Taxable excess
  • Additional voluntary contributions
  • Employee contribution refund
  • Interest adjustments
  • Transfer-ratio holdback
  • Quote expiry date

The Income Tax Act may limit how much of a defined-benefit lump sum can be transferred tax-deferred. An excess amount may be taxable or may require available RRSP room for additional planning.

A copycat annuity comparison should distinguish the money used to fund the annuity from amounts that may be paid separately.

Document 9: The Pension Start Date

An annuity quote depends on when payments begin.

Provide the exact:

  • Retirement date
  • Pension commencement date
  • First payment date
  • Bridge end date
  • Date of any scheduled increase
  • Election deadline

A quote beginning immediately cannot be compared with a pension that starts six months later without accounting for the missing payments.

Document 10: The Pension Plan Booklet

The summary statement does not always explain every pension feature.

The plan booklet may describe:

  • Pension formula
  • Early-retirement provisions
  • Indexing
  • Bridge calculations
  • Survivor rules
  • Guarantee periods
  • Transfer restrictions
  • Retiree benefits
  • Death benefits
  • Small-pension rules

Provide the most recent booklet or official plan summary available.

When the booklet conflicts with the current pension statement, ask the administrator to explain which terms apply to your retirement.

Document 11: Your Most Recent Annual Pension Statement

The annual statement can help confirm:

  • Credited service
  • Pensionable earnings
  • Beneficiary records
  • Employee contributions
  • Plan membership dates
  • Prior estimated pension amounts

It also allows the advisor to compare the annual projection with the final offer and identify unexpected changes.

A large difference does not automatically mean the final statement is wrong, but it should be explained.

Document 12: Spouse and Beneficiary Information

The quote may require:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your spouse’s date of birth
  • Marital status
  • Province of residence
  • Beneficiary information
  • Confirmation of any spousal waiver

Do not send unnecessary identity documents unless specifically requested through a secure process.

For the initial comparison, dates of birth and pension terms may be sufficient. The insurer or advisor can explain which identification documents are required before completing an application.

Document 13: Any Previous Pension or Annuity Quotes

Include previous:

  • Pension estimates
  • Commuted-value statements
  • Copycat annuity illustrations
  • Life-annuity quotes
  • Retirement-income comparisons

These can help show how values changed over time.

However, an old quote should never be assumed to remain available. Annuity pricing, pension values and interest rates can change.

Why Every Page Matters

Consider a pension summary that shows $4,800 per month.

Another page may reveal that:

  • $950 is a temporary bridge
  • The pension drops at 65
  • The illustration uses a 60% survivor option
  • The pension has partial indexing
  • The transfer value expires in 30 days
  • Part of the commuted value is taxable
  • Retiree health benefits are lost when the pension is transferred

Each detail affects the comparison.

A quote built from the first page alone could overlook the features that make the employer pension valuable.

A Copycat Annuity Document Checklist

Before requesting the quote, gather:

  1. Complete final pension statement
  2. Pension election form
  3. Lifetime pension amount
  4. Bridge-benefit breakdown
  5. Survivor pension details
  6. Indexing formula
  7. Guarantee-period terms
  8. Commuted-value breakdown
  9. Pension commencement date
  10. Quote and election deadlines
  11. Pension plan booklet
  12. Most recent annual statement
  13. Member and spouse dates of birth
  14. Previous estimates or quotes
  15. Information about retiree benefits

Do Not Sign Before the Comparison Is Complete

The transfer of a commuted value is generally irreversible once completed. The member gives up the right to receive the original monthly pension and associated plan benefits.

Pension Solutions Canada can review the complete pension package, identify the benefits that need to be reproduced and request appropriate annuity comparisons from eligible Canadian insurers.

Send the entire statement before the election deadline. A complete package makes it possible to compare the employer pension and copycat annuity using the same retirement date, survivor benefit, bridge payment and indexing provisions.

Disclaimer: This article provides general information. Copycat annuity availability depends on the pension plan, transfer rights, pension jurisdiction and insurer requirements.
