What GM CAMI Workers Need to Know About Their Pension Options After the Layoffs

GM’s plant in Ingersoll has been a major piece of the puzzle in GM Canada’s strategy—especially with electric vehicles. CAMI was the hub for BrightDrop, GM’s electric delivery van. But now that demand’s slowed and the EV market’s in a weird spot, GM’s pulling back.

According to Unifor and multiple news sources, the plant will shut down operations temporarily. GM says they’ll be back in the fall—but only with one shift. That’s a major drop from full production, and it means up to 500 employees are being laid off indefinitely.

The reason? Sluggish EV sales. Not tariffs. Not politics. Just good old-fashioned supply and demand not lining up.

What This Means for Your Pension

Here’s where things get serious. A layoff doesn’t just cut off your paycheck—it triggers a bunch of decisions you might not be ready for. If you’ve been at GM for a while, you’re probably sitting on a defined-benefit pension. That’s good news—but only if you handle it right.

When you leave a company like GM, you’re usually given a few options:

  • Leave your pension where it is and collect it later
  • Transfer the commuted value as a lump sum to your personal retirement account
  • Choose a copycat annuity that mimics your GM pension but is managed by a private insurance company

Each of these has pros, cons, and consequences. And they’re not reversible.

Let’s Break Down the Options

1. Defined-Benefit Pension: Leave It As Is

This is the traditional route. Your pension stays with GM, and when you hit retirement age, you start collecting a monthly income for life. The amount is based on your years of service and your salary—so it’s usually pretty predictable.

But here’s the catch: if you’re laid off early and leave the pension where it is, you might get hit with early retirement penalties. That could shrink your monthly payout more than you think.

Also, you’re relying entirely on GM to stay solvent and keep funding the plan. There’s some protection under pension laws, but still—your money is tied to them.

If you’re younger and not retiring for 10–15 years? This might not be your best bet.

2. Commuted Value: Take the Lump Sum

At any age the GM Cami pension allows you transfer the commuted value of your pension. That’s basically the present-day value of what GM owes you in retirement income, calculated as a lump sum.

That lump sum is moved into a locked-in retirement account (LIRA), where you manage how it’s invested. You get more control, flexibility, and the chance to grow your savings through the market. We guide you thru the paperwork and the investment management.

But this route isn’t without risk. You could make great investment choices and end up with more money than the pension would’ve paid. Or you could blow it and be left scrambling at age 75. Don’t blow it. Don’t buy a new boat.

Also, depending on the commuted value amount, part of the payout may exceed tax-free transfer limits [Maximum Transfer Value, MTV] and be immediately taxable, at 25% or 40% usually. It’s a huge decision. The math matters. So does your financial discipline.

3. Copycat Annuity: The Middle Ground

This is the option most people don’t know exists. You can use your commuted value to purchase what’s called a copycat annuity from a top-rated Canadian insurer—like Sun Life, Manulife, or Canada Life. This is actually a life annuity.

It’s called “copycat” because it mirrors the pension income you were promised by GM. Same monthly payments, same structure—but now it’s backed by an insurer instead of the company. CRA mandate that payments be identical. Plus, you will likely recieve a cash surplus or upto 10% of the commuted value. That cash is payable to YOU.

The upside? It gives you the same predictability as your GM pension, but you’ve moved the money out of the GM plan and into a fully insured private contract. That’s huge from a risk standpoint. Plus, you’re protected under Assuris, Canada’s version of deposit insurance for annuities.

For many people, especially those uncomfortable managing investments, this can be the best of both worlds—predictable income with less risk exposure.

What Should CAMI Workers Consider Right Now?

Here’s what you need to be thinking about, especially if you’ve received—or are about to receive—pension package documents.

Your Age

GM Cami pension allows you to take the commuted value at any age.

Your Financial Goals

Want flexibility to travel or start a small business? The commuted value gives you cash to play with. Want stability and peace of mind? The annuity or defined-benefit options might be more your style.

Inflation

Defined-benefit pensions often have no inflation protection. A fixed $2,000 a month might seem fine today, but what about in 20 years? Some copycat annuities offer inflation indexing—but not the GM Cami. The kcopycat can ONLY offer what the company pension offers.

Health

If you’re not in great health and suspect you won’t live into your 80s or 90s, a lifetime monthly pension may not be your best return. Commuted value or an annuity with a beneficiary guarantee might serve you better. Again, look at the options in the company pension plan. Those same options come with the copycat. Plus, there is usually a cash bonus with the copycat.

Taxes

Taking the lump sum can create a tax hit if part of it exceeds the transfer limits. But good planning can soften the blow.

What’s Going on with CAMI’s Future?

While the layoffs are officially “temporary,” the plant’s future is still uncertain. GM says they’ll reopen in the fall with one shift, which could cut total staff in half. The electric vehicle (EV) market is still growing, but sales of BrightDrop vans have underperformed so far.

If GM pivots again—or if demand continues to lag—this could be the beginning of a long-term scale-down.

That’s why it’s critical to plan your finances as though this isn’t temporary. If things turn around? Great. But if they don’t, you’ll be ahead of the game.

Don’t Forget This Isn’t Just About Money

Getting laid off—especially from a long-time employer like GM—is a massive emotional hit. It’s a loss of routine, identity, financial security, community. And for many, it brings stress, anxiety, and confusion.

Add to that the stress of making huge financial decisions about your pension? Yeah, it’s a lot.

This is where talking to a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) who actually understands defined-benefit pensions and copycat annuities makes a massive difference. Not a bank teller. Not a call center. Someone who can sit with you, look at your numbers, and help you figure out what retirement path makes sense for you.

Why Now Is the Time to Plan Your Retirement

If you’ve been thinking about retiring soon—maybe within the next 5 to 10 years—this layoff could actually be your opportunity to make the shift on your terms.

With a proper financial plan, you can:

  • Decide whether retiring early is doable
  • See if a commuted value or annuity could give you a better outcome
  • Lock in guaranteed income now instead of waiting for market swings

And if you’re not ready to retire? Use this moment to build a new plan. That might include:

  • Retraining or exploring new work opportunities. Take the commuted value and let it grow.
  • Taking a severance and investing in your own business
  • Reassessing what lifestyle you want when retirement does come

What We’re Doing at Pension Solutions Canada

Our team of Certified Financial Planners specializes in this exact situation. We work with laid-off employees from major companies—especially those with defined-benefit and defined-contribution pensions—and help them navigate the copycat annuity and commuted value process.

We’ll walk you through your options, run the numbers, and help you decide:

  • Should you keep the pension or take the lump sum?
  • Is an annuity the right fit for your retirement style?
  • What’s the most tax-efficient way to structure your payout?
  • How much income will you actually need—and how long will it last?

We’re independent. We don’t work for GM. We don’t sell insurance products. We just help you make the smartest move for your future.

Before You Sign Anything…

The pension paperwork from GM might seem straightforward. It’s not. There are deadlines, hidden assumptions, tax rules, and long-term consequences.

If you’re thinking about cashing out your pension, taking the annuity, or even just leaving it where it is—talk to a planner first.

Once you make the decision, you can’t go back.

Don’t Let Uncertainty Stop You

Yes, it’s a tough time. Layoffs, market shifts, uncertainty around your future—it’s a lot. But it’s also a moment of choice. And if you use this moment well, you can build a better, more secure retirement plan than you ever had before.

Get the right advice. Ask questions. Take your time—but don’t wait too long.

The decisions you make now will shape your financial life for the next 30 years. Let’s make sure they’re the right ones.
